If you're visiting this site, you're aware that I moved to Shanghai a few years ago. I fought it for a while, but I finally realized that it'd be a lot easier just to make updates at a central place and have you all check for stories if you want to or not...(and besides, I was a tech guy...) I'll try to update the "Life in Asia" section frequently, so you can laugh at me trying to understand this very different culture.
Shanghai is an incredible place and walking the city provides me with an abundance of stories. Only the really strange ones will make it on here though.
Shang = Above and Hai = Sea, so Shanghai means "Above the Sea". The Huangpu river splits Shanghai in two parts, Puxi and Pudong ("East Pu" and "West Pu"). Pudong is the financial district and newer side, Puxi is the older and more historical...also where all of the restaurants and nightlife are located. (Puxi is widely known as the "Good" side for entertainment.)
If you're planning a trip to Shanghai, let me know. I can't promise that I'll take time off to see the city with you, but I can certainly help you negotiate at the markets (I'm getting pretty damn good and I
will fight for that final 10 RMB, or about $1.50).
