Why Hindumas.com?

I reserved the site and never did anything with it, so I figured I'll just use this place to update you all on my adventures across the pond.

What is Hindumas? Think  Festivus...

Our family immigrated to the U.S. when we were very young.  Primarily growing up in the U.S., the culture is instilled upon you everywhere you go...at School, on T.V., when shopping, when watching sports and even in business dealings.  The business world seems to shut down during the time surrounding Christmas and New Year's, to the point that several Fortune 500 companies close their corporate offices during this time.

The holidays in the West are no more clearly defined as Christmas, and the effects of this holiday resonate throughout the entire culture...which is why, we've accepted that Christmas is more of a Cultural Holiday and less of a religious one.

While growing up, my family didn't even think to fight the cultural influence - yes, we had a Christmas tree even for the first Christmas in the States.  We exchanged presents, we put lights on our house and Santa Claus showed up on Christmas Eve.

Because of an influx of missionaries, Christianity is rampant in Kerala, my family's home state in India. Although we celebrate Christmas today as we always have, our Hindu upbringings and beliefs have never been abandoned.  For this reason, the phrase "Happy Hindumas" was coined several years ago.

We have no intent to take away the religious importance of Christmas, to Christians. Rather, we are celebrating and respecting their very important holiday in our own manner.
I'm now thinking that there could be a "Happy China-mas" or maybe a "Happy Buddha-mas"...
